~Bluenose~
Bluenose
was built in Nova Scotia in March 26, 1921 to fish the rough
waters off the coast of Newfoundland. A salt banker type, she
stayed out until her hulls were full, using salt to preserve the
catch. The ship soon turned out to be such a fast sailer that
she won all great classical regattas along the USA’s Eastern
coast.
Throughout
the 1920’s and 30’s she came to international attention by
winning the International Fisherman’s Race, the working mans
answer to a gentleman’s American Cup. Bluenose beat New
England’s Elise in 1921, won three races in 1922, two in 1921
and three more in 1931. Bluenose was Canada’s official
representative at the “Century of Progress” exhibition in
Chicago in 1933 and also a Canadian fishing schooner that
outraced catches or fish, and even ran rum during prohibition.
Bluenose
was lost in a reef outside of Haiti in 1946, but an exact
replica was launched in 1963. |
